Chose between my 909 and a $40 plugin for the D11-04 title track, and now I can't tell which loop was which
When I was finishing the title track for D11-04 last month, I had to pick between running my old TR-909 through a beaten up interface or just dropping in a plugin I got on sale for 40 bucks. I went with the plugin because the 909 was acting up after the move from San Salvador, and honestly it sat in the mix fine. Then a DJ friend played the track at a spot in Mexico City and I stood there trying to remember which kick I actually used. Has anyone else lost track of their own gear sounds after bouncing between hardware and software so much?
Is it really that big a deal though? If the plugin sat fine in the mix and a crowd in Mexico City was moving to it, the kick did its job. Half the people dancing don't know a 909 from a trash can lid. The only one losing sleep over it is you, standing in a club trying to remember your own setup like it's a pop quiz. Sounds less like a gear problem and more like you just need to label your sessions next time.
