The sound guy at my first real gig in San Salvador taught me more in 10 minutes than 3 years of tutorials
I was 19, playing my first set at a bar in Zona Rosa, and my mix was muddy as hell. This older guy named Chepe walked up, pointed at my mids, and said 'you're fighting yourself, cut 300 and let the kick breathe.' I did it, and the room changed instantly. Six years later I still cut that same spot on every track before I even think about anything else. What's the one piece of advice from a stranger that still lives in your workflow?
That "you're fighting yourself" line hits hard because I fought myself for years without knowing it. Tbh my dumb version of this was a drummer telling me my snare sounded like a wet cardboard box, and now I check that same spot on every mix like a nervous habit. Funny how one random stranger can fix in ten minutes what a thousand YouTube videos never could.
