Am I the only one who just found out drywall screws aren't meant for load-bearing stuff?

I was hanging some heavy shelves in my garage last month and used drywall screws like I always do. My buddy who does framing came over and saw what I was doing and just laughed. He told me drywall screws have a brittle shaft and can snap under shear force, so they're really only for holding drywall to studs. I looked it up online and sure enough, they're rated for way less weight than I thought. Now I gotta redo those shelves with proper lag bolts before something crashes down. Anyone else make this mistake for years without knowing?

Is drywall really that heavy though? Ive used em for shelves and shelves and never had one break on me. Maybe if youre hanging a whole ass engine block but for most stuff theyre fine lol.
