Bought a $150 moisture meter before redoing my bathroom floor
It showed a small wet spot under the toilet I couldn't see. Some say it's a waste for a one-time job, but I think it saved me from laying new tile over a rotten subfloor. I would have had to rip it all out in a year. Do you guys check for moisture on every floor project, or only when you see a clear problem?

Man, that meter just paid for itself in future headaches.

Exactly, @terry_butler. Good tools stop problems before they even start. Saves a ton of time and cash.

Yeah, "stops problems before they even start" is the truth. I had a buddy who ignored a tiny water stain on his ceiling for like two weeks. By the time he called someone, the whole corner of his kitchen had mold and the drywall was basically mush. He spent a whole weekend tearing stuff out and it cost him way more than just fixing the drip early. Definitely a lesson in not waiting around, like @young.drew was saying.
