Caught a neighbor saying he paints trim with old sheets instead of drop cloths

I was picking up mulch at the hardware store last weekend and heard this older guy telling his son he always uses flattened cardboard boxes for paint jobs. Said he hasn't bought a canvas drop cloth in 20 years. It got me thinking about how much money I've spent on those plastic ones that tear after one use. Has anyone else tried using cardboard or something else instead of a regular drop cloth?

Newspaper works fine for trim, not for rolling walls though.

@the_william truth. Tried it once for walls. Had ink all over my hands. Never again.
