I swore by my cordless drill until I flooded my bathroom floor trying to install a towel rack

I was in my apartment in Denver, trying to mount it above the tile, and the drill bit slipped, cracking a pipe behind the wall, which led to a $300 emergency plumber call and a huge mess that convinced me to always, always use a stud finder and check for plumbing lines first, even for small projects. Has anyone else had a simple project go sideways in a spectacular way?

My simple shelf install cost me a new ceiling.

Oh man, I feel your pain! I once tried to hang a heavy mirror and ended up drilling straight into an electrical wire. The sparks flew, the power went out, and I had to call an electrician who charged me $200 just to tell me I was an idiot. My mirror still sits on the floor leaning against the wall as a monument to my hubris. Now I just use command strips for everything, even if it means my decorations fall off in the middle of the night. What's the most expensive mistake you've made with a power tool?
