Just found out most homes lose about 30% of their heat through the windows, read it in a library book on old house insulation.

That 30% figure, does it include old single-pane windows?

Actually the 30% stat is for modern double-pane windows. Old single-pane windows are way worse, they can lose over half the heat in a house. I had a 1950s bungalow with original windows and you could feel the cold air pouring in. Upgrading those made a bigger difference than anything else. Why would newer windows even be the focus if the old ones are the real problem?

vera541's right about old single-pane windows being terrible but I'd push back a little, the 30% stat is usually based on older homes with single-pane windows in those energy studies. @vera541, just different ways of measuring i guess - some studies focus on total heat loss through all windows regardless of age, not just new ones.
