My bathroom shelf brackets were too short so I tried those plastic anchor alternatives and it backfired

I was putting up a floating shelf in my half bath last weekend and the brackets I bought were about an inch shorter than what the instructions called for. Instead of driving back to Lowe's I figured I'd try those heavy duty plastic toggle anchors I saw on a YouTube video. Big mistake. The shelf went up fine at first but after I loaded it with like 8 pounds of toiletries and a candle the whole thing sagged on one side and pulled the anchor right out of the drywall. Left a hole the size of a quarter in my freshly painted wall. Turns out those toggles are great for light stuff but not for anything with any real weight on a narrow shelf. I ended up patching the hole with some spackle and ordering the right brackets online. Has anyone else had those plastic anchors let them down on a simple project like that?

My buddy Bob did the same thing last month and his shelf ended up on the floor with his cologne bottles shattered everywhere.

Drywall anchors saved my shelf from the same fate.
