My dad swore up and down that caulking the tub was a 20 minute job, and I just wasted my whole Saturday on it
Honestly I should have known better when my dad handed me a tube of caulk and said it would take 20 minutes tops. It's been 6 hours and I'm still scraping old silicone off with a plastic scraper because the previous owner slathered it on like frosting. The guy at the hardware store in Canton told me to use a heat gun first but my dad said that was overkill and would melt the tub. Well the tub didn't melt but now I've got half the old caulk off and a scratch on the fiberglass I can't hide. I watched 4 videos and they all said wait 24 hours to shower which means cold showers until Monday. Has anyone else had a family member give them bad DIY advice that cost them a whole weekend?
Laughed at the frosting comparison because that is exactly what my previous owner did too. My uncle pulled the same move on me with a "quick" fence repair that turned into two weekends and a tetanus shot. Family members always think every job is a 20 minute deal, probably because they did it once in 1987 with different materials. The heat gun guy was right, for what it's worth, and your dad owes you at least one cold shower's worth of apology. Just be glad you didn't find rot behind that caulk like I did.
