Serious question, are you still using old galvanized pipe for outdoor water lines?

For years, I ran a simple garden hose from a spigot on my house to a vegetable patch about 50 feet away. Last winter in St. Louis, a hard freeze split the line and flooded my basement. I replaced it all with PEX tubing run through a buried PVC conduit, and the difference is night and day. It's insulated, protected from the sun, and I can drain it easily before cold weather hits. What do you use for long outdoor water runs now?

Nah, galvanized is classic and lasts forever.

But that old galvanized pipe is a real headache waiting to happen. It rusts from the inside out, so your water pressure just gets worse and worse over the years. I had to replace a section last summer and the clog was unbelievable, just chunks of rust. For a permanent outdoor line, using modern materials like PEX in a conduit is the only smart move. Why fight with something that's guaranteed to fail?
