Spent $600 on smart thermostats before I noticed this one basic thing

So I bought three smart thermostats over 6 months, all different brands, thinking I was upgrading my place. Turns out, the wiring in my 1978 condo had a shared neutral line that none of the install guides mentioned. Found out after I posted a pic to a local electrician group and someone pointed it out in like 5 minutes. Now I have to rewire two junction boxes just to make them work without tripping breakers. Has anyone else dealt with older homes and smart gear not playing nice together?
