That caulking job in my bathroom failed after just 8 weeks
I recaulked around my tub in March with what I thought was decent silicone, and by May it was peeling off in chunks where water pools near the drain. Turns out I didn't clean the old residue well enough before applying, which I totally glossed over because I was in a hurry. Has anyone found a foolproof way to strip old caulk without scratching the porcelain?

The trick is getting ALL the old stuff off before you even think about putting new caulk down. You gotta scrape it out with a utility knife and then hit it with some rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits on a rag to dissolve any leftover film... don't just wipe it once either, keep going until the rag comes up clean. After that, make sure the surface is bone dry for at least a few hours before you apply new silicone, especially around the drain where moisture hides. I've started using one of those caulk tools with the different shaped tips to smooth it out and push it deep into the gap, which helps stop water from getting underneath later. The real trick nobody tells you is that cheap caulk from the hardware store isn't always the best for wet areas, so spend a couple extra bucks on a big name brand made for bathrooms.
