The guy at the lumber yard who stopped me from building a deck that would've collapsed in 2 years

He pointed at my joist hanger nails and said 'you're using the wrong ones, those will rust out in a season' and then handed me a box of hot-dipped galvanized nails, so has anyone else had a random stranger save them from a major screw up?

Did that old guy explain how to spot a buried flange before you even get the toilet home, or was it more of a gut feeling thing he had? Always wondered if those hardware store lifers can just look at a floor and know what's underneath. Kind of a superpower if you ask me.

Oh man, that's a life saver right there. lmao I had something similar happen when I was trying to install a new toilet. Some old dude at the hardware store saw me loading up the cheapest wax ring and told me to get the extra thick one with the rubber sleeve instead. He said my floor had a weird gap I wouldn't notice until it was too late. Sure enough, I got home and the flange was buried like half an inch below the tile, that thick ring saved me from a nasty leak. I swear those random guys in the aisles know more than any YouTube tutorial ever could.
