Why does nobody talk about the actual weight of a gallon of paint?

I was carrying a new 5 gallon bucket of exterior paint from the store to my truck and my arm about gave out. I looked it up later and a full gallon of latex paint weighs almost 11 pounds. That means a full 5 gallon bucket is over 50 pounds, not including the bucket itself! I found that on a contractor forum from a guy in Tacoma. Anyone else been surprised by how heavy their materials actually are?

Nah, I gotta disagree here. Five gallons of paint feels like a workout but it's not that bad if you lift with your legs lol. I've carried way heavier stuff, like a 60 pound bag of concrete mix, and nobody whines about that. Paint buckets at least have a handle.

My buddy in college tried to carry two of those buckets at once and threw his back out for a week. Kelly_hill is right about the bucket adding weight, but it's that awkward shape that really gets you. He still walks funny when it rains.

That "over 50 pounds" is actually the total weight WITH the bucket. The paint itself is about 45 pounds for five gallons. The plastic bucket adds a few more. Still a total beast to carry.
