Drywall dust hit exactly 47 pounds and my shop vac gave up

I was sanding 600 square feet of new drywall in the basement last weekend and decided to weigh the dust bag when it clogged. The bathroom scale said 47 pounds, which blew my mind because I thought I was maybe halfway done. That's when I realized my cheap 5 gallon shop vac was never meant for this and I overheated the motor. I switched to a dust extractor with a HEPA filter and now I'm wondering if the extra $120 was worth it or if I just needed a better bag setup. Anyone else hit a weight that made them reconsider their whole sanding game?

Talked to my buddy last spring after he tried sanding his whole garage ceiling with a regular vacuum. He measured the dust pile in his yard at about 60 pounds and the vac smelled like burnt toast for a week before it died on him.
