Finally got the hang of feathering drywall mud after 6 bad patches

I kept getting those hard ridges between coats on my bathroom reno in Denver until an old painter told me to feather out the edges way further than I thought, like 12 inches instead of 4. Tried it on my last patch job and the sanding was literally half the work this time. Anyone else have a simple trick that took them way too long to figure out?

6 patches seems like a lot of trial and error for something that's not exactly rocket science. Maybe the problem wasn't technique but just overthinking it in the first place. Plenty of guys just slap mud on and it turns out fine with a little sanding.

@kai_bennett Sure, sometimes slapping mud on works, but have you ever had it bubble up or crack the next day? I messed up six patches once because I was rushing the drying time between coats. Turns out, letting each layer fully set before sanding makes a huge difference. The real trick is using a hair dryer on low to speed things up without causing stress cracks. Bet it would've saved you a couple rounds too if you tried that.
