Hired a local guy for a tile job, ended up teaching him how to waterproof

I had a guy from Craigslist quote me $1,200 to redo my bathroom floor in Austin, and he showed up with no cement board, just plywood and thinset. I stopped him after he spread the first patch and asked where the waterproofing was, and he said it was 'not needed for a floor.' I made him go to Home Depot with me and grabbed a roll of RedGard and some backer board, then spent 3 hours helping him install it right. Have any of you dealt with contractors who skip basic steps like this, or am I just lucky?

Remember that cement board doesn't actually waterproof anything, it's just a stable base, but glad you got him to at least use it before you got a mold problem down the line.
