I finally realized my paint roller technique was backwards after 5 years

Honestly, I always thought you had to load the roller heavy and then roll fast to spread it out. But last weekend I painted my living room in Portland and a neighbor walked by my open window. He said I was basically just pushing paint around instead of letting the nap do the work. Turns out you're supposed to go slow and steady with even pressure, not like you're trying to finish a race. The finish on that one wall I redid came out way smoother and I didn't have those weird lines everywhere. Has anyone else had a basic technique click way later than it should have?

Wait, you really think going slow is always better? I mean, I get that heavy loading can get messy, but I've always done a quick medium speed with a light touch and my walls look fine. Like, I just did my bedroom last month and I did a quick back roll to even it out, no streaks or weird lines. Maybe it depends on the roller nap or the paint brand? I use the cheap purdy rollers and behr paint, honestly never had issues until I tried going slow and ended up with a ton of drips on the floor.
