I was sure I could tile a shower floor without a leveling system

I was working on my bathroom in my old house in Boise, laying penny tile on the shower floor. About halfway through, I noticed a serious dip in the corner that would hold water. I had to pull up all the wet tiles, clean the thinset, and start over using a clip system. It added a full day to the project but the floor is perfectly flat now. Has anyone else had a tile job go sideways like that?

Honestly, I've never used clips and my floors turn out fine.

You're just lucky or you have low standards.

Read a blog post that totally backs up your clip system fix, miles277.

Miles saying his floors turn out fine without clips is a bold claim. I've seen too many jobs with lippage you could trip on from guys who thought they could eyeball it. That dip in the corner is exactly why those systems exist. It's not about luck, it's about not creating a problem you have to fix later.
