Painted my kitchen cabinets over a weekend and the difference is night and day

I finally did it after putting it off for like 2 years. My cabinets were that ugly 90s oak with the orange tint. Started Friday night with a degreaser and sanding, then used a tinted shellac primer. By Sunday evening I had them done in a matte navy blue. Cost me about $65 for paint and supplies total. Did anyone else see a huge change just from painting cabinets instead of replacing them?

Honestly, I gotta push back on "night and day" because I've seen so many painted cabinets peel or chip within a year, especially around the handles where you grab them all the time. Tbh, the prep work you did sounds solid, but matte navy is gonna show every single fingerprint and grease splatter like crazy, and you can't just wipe it down without risking the finish. Ngl, a lot of people end up regretting the paint route cause it looks great for a month then starts looking rough, and you're stuck with it since sanding it all off is a nightmare. I'd rather save up for real replacement doors over the gamble of paint holding up long term.

Abby's right about the wear and tear (especially matte navy, you'll be wiping that down constantly). The chipping around handles is real too, that's usually where the paint fails first no matter how good your prep was. And stripping it later is genuinely the worst, I helped a friend fix hers and it took three weekends just to get back to bare wood.
