Shoutout to my neighbor who watched me demolish the wrong wall
So last Saturday I decided to knock down a wall between my kitchen and dining room in my 1970s ranch house in Tulsa. I watched a ton of videos, checked for load bearing by looking at the joists, and felt pretty confident. Started swinging the sledgehammer and got through the drywall pretty quick when my neighbor Bob strolled over with his coffee and just watched me for like five minutes. Then he goes, 'you know that wall you're about to tear into next, that's the one holding up your roof, right?' Turns out I misread the joist direction completely and was one swing away from a structural mess. I stopped right there, covered the hole with plastic, and called a real contractor who charged me 300 bucks to verify what Bob said for free. Has anyone else had a neighbor save them from a dumb move mid-reno, or am I the only one who almost turned their house into a lean-to?
