Tiling debate with my neighbor that still bugs me
My neighbor Dave insisted I needed backbutter on every single tile for my kitchen backsplash. I told him for small subway tiles in a dry area it's overkill, just notch the wall. He got all red in the face and said I'd have callbacks within a year. Three years later everything is still solid. So which side are you on, do you backbutter every tile even for small walls?

Yeah but what kind of modified thinset were you running? I've seen guys with garbage premix fail on full coverage tiles while deck mud holds a backsplash together. Guessing you used something like Versabond or similar?

Well, huh, that's a good example of how things can work out different in practice than what the "rules" say. I gotta ask though, what kind of thinset did you use and what size trowel notch? In my experience, that combination plus the tile size can make or break the bond just as much as backbuttering or not.
