A guy in a Trump hat at a diner in Scranton told me to stop reading polls and start knocking doors, and he was dead right
Honestly I laughed at him at first. This was back in September, I'm sitting at the counter getting coffee and this older guy with a Trump hat starts talking to me about the election. I said something like well the polls look good so I'm not too worried. He put his cup down and said son, polls never knocked on a single door in their life, you want to know what's really happening go talk to 20 people on your own street.
I rolled my eyes ngl. But then a week later I actually did it. Just walked my block, maybe 15 houses, talked to whoever would open up. And the stuff people brought up was nothing like what the news was saying. Half of them didn't even want to talk about the big stuff, they wanted to know why the price of eggs at the Aldi on Keyser Ave was up again.
Anyway I ended up doing it every weekend after that, probably 60 houses total by the end. The guy was right. Polls tell you a number, people tell you a feeling. Two totally different things.
Anyone else ever have a random stranger hand them better advice than anything they read online? What did they say?
That older guy gave you solid advice. Knocking doors taught me more in one weekend than a year of reading articles. People will tell you stuff at their door they would never say to a pollster on the phone. One lady spent ten minutes on her porch about her son's insulin costing more than her car payment. Nobody was asking that in a survey. Polls measure what people already decided, doors measure what they are still mad about. Keep walking that block.
