Caught myself saying fake news like a tic, felt stupid

Last week I was arguing with my brother about the debate and I said the polls were fake news. He laughed and said I sounded like a parrot. I stopped and realized I had been repeating that phrase for months without actually checking any numbers. I looked up the real polling averages after that and my whole argument fell apart. Has anyone else caught themselves parroting a talking point and then had to walk it back?

The thing about polls is they're not really fake or real, they're just a snapshot and they have a margin of error that goes both ways. So the polls could've been off in 2016 and still be right on average, those two things can both be true. I fell into the same trap for a while, repeating stuff my cousin said about rigged polls, then I actually read how sampling works and felt like a idiot. The talking point works because it sounds smart but falls apart the second you look at how the math actually works.
