Old sign painter in Detroit showed me a paint mixing trick that actually saved a job last week

I was struggling to match a faded Trump 2020 banner from 4 years ago for a client, and this guy told me to add a drop of yellow to red paint to mimic sun bleaching. It worked perfectly on the first try. Has anyone else picked up a weird trade secret from a random stranger on a job site?

Piled onto that trick myself just last month matching a weathered campaign sign from 2020. The guy who taught me was a retired house painter who said the sun eats the red first in older paint formulas. He had me mix a tiny bit of raw umber into the batch to knock down the brightness without making it muddy. Worked like a charm on the second try after I added too much brown the first time... had to start over. Those old timers really know their stuff from decades of watching paint age in real time. I actually read somewhere that sun bleaching affects colors differently based on the UV index in the area. Detroit gets a lot of cloudy days so the fading is more yellow than places like Arizona where it's more white. That drop of yellow trick makes total sense now because the sun strips the red pigments first and leaves the warm tones behind. I remember a thread where a mural artist said they use a tiny bit of brown paint to match old outdoor signs.
