That time livestreaming a rally crashed my phone

I was at a Trump rally in Phoenix last October and tried to livestream the whole thing on my old iPhone. About 45 minutes in, the phone overheated and shut down completely, right when he was doing his signature hand gestures. I missed the whole closing speech because I was stuck staring at a black screen. Has anyone else had their phone die at a big event like that? What do you do to keep your battery cool when filming?

oh man, I read somewhere that phones basically throttle themselves or shut down when they hit around 113 degrees Fahrenheit internally (which is way lower than you'd think). That heat is basically the enemy of all lithium ion batteries. So yeah, your old iPhone probably just hit its limit there in the Phoenix sun (I mean, Arizona in October is still brutal). I've heard some people swear by those little gel cooling pads you can stick on the back of your phone (like the ones for babies' fevers but smaller). But honestly, the clip-on fan trick the other commenter mentioned sounds like the most practical fix (plus you can use it to cool yourself off too).

Dropped my phone in a cup of ice water once at a county fair to cool it down mid-video, ended up with a dead phone AND wet pockets. Now I just bring a cheap external battery pack and point a little clip-on fan at the phone while it's running. Learned the hard way that phones hate being hot almost as much as they hate being wet.
