I used to think 3D printing was just a hobby thing for drafters

For years, I saw it as a toy, not a real tool for our trade. Then, about six months ago, I had a complex HVAC duct fitting that needed a custom transition piece. I modeled it in CAD and printed a prototype on a borrowed Ultimaker. Being able to hold the part in my hand before any metal was cut saved a huge amount of time and client questions. It completely changed how I handle tricky custom fittings now. Has anyone else found a specific job where a printed model made the difference?

Yeah, that "hold the part in your hand" bit is exactly it... I was the same way until I printed a custom pipe hanger for a weird retrofit.

Totally get that. I printed a little hook for my kitchen sink sprayer that kept falling down. I must have tried three different store bought ones that never fit right. Finally just measured the pipe and made my own in like an hour. It's still holding up two years later. That feeling when something you made just clicks into place is the best.
