I was at a big job site in Denver and saw a guy using a laser level for layout instead of string lines.

He was setting up a foundation grid for a new warehouse, and his lines were dead straight and way faster to check. I tried it on my next project, a small garage addition, and it cut my layout time in half. Do you all use lasers for site work now, or stick with the old string and chalk method?

Lasers are basically cheating at this point. The old guard still swears by string, but they also think a bubble level is high tech. I'm not going back to fighting with a chalk line in the wind.

My uncle still uses a string level for deck posts. Watched him fight a breeze for twenty minutes last Saturday. I handed him my laser, he called it a toy. His posts are still a little off, mine are perfect.

That laser cost me three hours of overtime.
