Appreciation post: Choosing the 12-inch cutter head over the 8-inch for the silt job on the Willamette paid off big time
I went with the bigger head expecting slower progress but less clogging, and we cleared the whole channel section a full day ahead of schedule because we never had to stop and clear the pump.

Right, because usually it's just overkill and you look silly. This time it actually saved the day though. Guess we can't always assume bigger is dumber.

That 12-inch head on the Willamette was a smart gamble. I've seen guys haul out the biggest possible rig for everything and it just wastes time and fuel, but this is a perfect example of matching the tool to the actual conditions. Sometimes the bigger gear is the right answer when the silt is that thick and sticky.
