DAE recall the smell of oil and river mud on the old bucket dredges?
These new electric ones are so clean, it almost doesn't feel like the same job.

Man, that oil and river mud smell takes me back. When we switched to electric, I kept a rag with a bit of old gear oil in my locker (sounds weird, I know) to get that familiar scent now and then.

Used to think Joel had a point about the trade-off. Reading about the oil rag made me realize it's not just a smell. It's the memory of the work itself.

Is it really that big a deal though? Sure the smell reminds you of the old days, but those bucket dredges were messy and loud. Oil leaks were a constant headache and the fumes could get rough in tight spaces. I get the nostalgia thing, but cleaner air and less noise seems like a pretty fair trade to me.
