Debating whether to bring my teen on summer dredge runs
Some say it's good for them to learn the trade early, but I worry about safety and if they'll even like it. We do small inland jobs that might be okay for a starter. What's your experience?

Wait, you're seriously considering putting a teenager on a dredge? That's some seriously heavy, dangerous work even on the calmest inland job. Sure, learning a trade is good, but that environment is no joke with all the moving parts and water hazards. My cousin did something similar and still has the scar from a snapped cable. Maybe start them on the shore moving equipment, not on the barge itself.

Proper training matters more than age in those jobs. A lot of young people learn real responsibility by doing tough work safely. It's not for everyone, but it can be done right with the right setup.

Well, @the_laura, I guess we found the one person who'd trust a teen with a live cable and a river.
