Had to choose between a new pump or a full engine rebuild on the old cutterhead dredge last month. Went with the pump, and it was the wrong call.

Used to think that was the smart move too.

Our 2018 cutterhead project proved the rebuild is cheaper long-term.

Oh yeah, because nothing says "cheaper" like spending 3 months in the weeds and then discovering the rebuilt part has a whole new set of problems you didn't budget for. We did the same dance on our 2017 unit, saved maybe five hundred bucks upfront only to eat it in overtime when the thing grenaded two weeks later. I swear, every time someone says "proven rebuild" I hear the sound of my maintenance budget crying in the corner. It's like buying a used mattress and convincing yourself it's a good deal because you didn't pay full price. But hey, at least we can all bond over our shared misery, right?
