My old foreman told me to always check the suction line screen after a heavy silt run

He said it back in '08 on the Columbia River project, and I thought it was just extra work. Last month on a channel job near Portland, we lost prime three times in one shift. Finally pulled the screen and it was packed solid with river grass and plastic bags. Cost us half a day of downtime. Anyone else have a 'useless' tip that saved your skin later?

Remember my uncle saying to always pack a spare pair of dry socks in a ziplock bag, called it dumb. Got caught in a flash flood last spring surveying a creek bed, boots filled up. Those dry socks were the only reason I didn't get trench foot walking back to the truck.

Man that suction screen story hits close. Had an old timer tell me the same thing about checking the intake grate on a dredge pump. Ignored it for years. Then we plugged it with a tarp and a dead fish. Lost a whole afternoon. Dry socks trick is gold too. Learned that one the hard way walking a slough in January. Feet were wrecked for a week.

Seriously, my buddy learned that the hard way too.
