Old hand on the Mississippi told me to always run the cutterhead at half speed when you hit clay

He was working a barge near Baton Rouge back in '98 and said if you gun it you'll just pack the suction line solid, and I've seen three guys learn that the hard way since then, any of you run into that?

Learn it the hard way or listen, choice is pretty simple.

Three times I tried learning the hard way before I finally listened. First time I was running a dredge near Vicksburg and I figured I knew better than the old timer who told me the same thing. Ended up spending four hours on a Saturday afternoon with a water jet trying to unplug that suction pipe. My foreman still brings it up at every safety meeting like it's some kind of cautionary tale about me.
