I finally told a homeowner to do it himself last Tuesday

Guy in a new subdivision in Rockford kept following me around asking why I couldn't just use less mud on the seams. I told him three times that it would crack. He said I was just trying to upsell him on extra materials. So I handed him a trowel and a bucket and told him to have at it. Has anyone else had a client who thought they knew better than a 15 year guy?

Wait, did you really think a homeowner who follows you around second-guessing your work would actually grab a trowel and finish the job himself?

Honestly that's like expecting my cat to finish digging the foundation, just not gonna happen.

3M actually makes a pre-filled joint compound that's designed to be a thinner consistency for homeowners who don't know any better. But on a real note, I've been in the trades for 12 years and I've learned some people just need to mess up their own walls before they'll respect your experience. You did the right thing letting him find out the hard way.
