Met an old timer in Denver who taught me the trick to flat seams
I was on a job near downtown Denver last month and this guy in his 60s walked up, saw me struggling with a butt seam, and showed me how to feather the mud way thinner than I'd been doing. He said 'stop trying to cover it in one pass, you'll just sand forever.' His name was Dave and he worked for the same company for 35 years. Has anyone else gotten tips from random guys on site that actually changed how you work?

That Dave sounds like a legend. Had a similar thing with a painter in Portland who showed me how to backroll properly, saved me hours of frustration.

Totally. I had this old timer show me how to angle the brush just right when cutting in around window trim. He said to load the brush about halfway and then tap it against the inside of the can to knock off the excess. I used to get drips everywhere before that. Now I can do a whole room without a single errant brush mark. It's those little tricks that make all the difference.

Gotta admit, I used to think those old timer tricks were just old school habits that didn't matter much. But a guy in Austin showed me the same thing with mud - he had me thin it way more than I thought was right and do two light passes instead of one heavy one. Changed my whole approach to drywall finishing, saved me tons of sanding time on big jobs. Your experience with Dave lines up with what I've seen too.
