Switched to a 12-inch taping knife for a whole ceiling and my shoulders thanked me

Used it on a 2,000 sq ft job in Omaha last month and the wider spread cut my mudding time by like a third. Anyone else made a simple tool swap that actually paid off big?

Yeah that's a huge time save. Did you have to change your mud mix at all to keep it from sagging on a 12-inch? I tried one years ago but it felt like I was fighting the mud the whole time, maybe my mix was too thin.

The real cost saver is the wrist motion switching from back-and-forth to more of a smooth pivot if you mount the knife handle slightly longer. I added a 4-inch extension to mine and it lets me load and spread with less shoulder rotation overall. The extra leverage also keeps the blade flatter against the ceiling so I get less of that edge digging in that you get with a standard handle.

The real trick is keeping your mud pan clean for a wide knife. A dirty pan edge will leave ridges in your finish coat every single time, which kills the time you saved.
