TIL I was sanding drywall compound way too wet for over a year

I always mixed my joint compound a bit runny thinking it would spread easier and sand smoother. Last Tuesday I watched an old timer at a job site in Portland mix his mud stiffer like peanut butter and it laid down way flatter. After it dried I tried sanding his finish and it barely needed any effort. Now I cut back on the water and my sanding time dropped by about 30 percent. Has anyone else found a mix ratio that works best for them?

Oh wow, you finally saw the light. I ran mine like soup for months until a foreman called me out. Now I aim for mayo consistency, maybe a bit thicker. Sanding takes half the time and I don't get that gritty dust cloud anymore.

30% faster? You been timing yourself with a stopwatch?
