TIL that pre-filling screw holes with a dab of compound before driving the screw actually works
I always thought it was a waste of time, you know, just an extra step. But on a job last week in a new build, we were dealing with some really springy studs. The drywall just wouldn't sit tight, and we kept getting those little 'nail pops' before we even taped. My partner, this guy named Ray, said to try it. He put a tiny bit of mud on the tip of each screw before sinking it. I was sure it was just making a mess. But after the first coat dried, those panels were locked in solid. No bounce, no dimples. It only added maybe 15 minutes to hanging a whole room, but it saved us a headache later. Has anyone else found a little trick like this that seemed silly but actually fixed a specific problem?

Interesting. I've tried that trick before and it made a real mess for me. The compound can get gummy and actually stop the screw from seating all the way. I've had better luck just making sure to hit the center of the stud and using a fresh bit.

That method can work great if you use the right mud. The key is using a lightweight compound that doesn't gum up. Just a tiny dab makes a big difference on springy wood.
