Was at a new apartment complex in Phoenix and saw they're using 1/2 inch board for everything, even the ceilings...

Isn't that just the standard for a lot of new builds now? I've seen it in a few places. They use the half inch for walls and ceilings to save on cost and weight. It gets the job done for basic drywall. Maybe it feels a bit cheap, but it's not like it's falling down.

Spot on about saving money, but it's a bad trade. That half inch board dents if you look at it wrong and does nothing to stop sound between units. You end up with walls that feel hollow and every little noise from your neighbors. Builders get away with it because it meets the bare minimum code, but it makes for a worse place to live long term.

Ever try putting a picture up on that stuff? It's like taylor82 said, you breathe on it and there's a dent. I ended up using way more anchors than normal just to feel safe.
