My uncle's one piece of advice about paperwork saved me from deportation
Honestly when I first got here my uncle told me keep every single receipt and letter even if it seems dumb. I thought he was being paranoid but after 2 years when immigration asked me to prove I was working I had a stack of pay stubs from my restaurant job going back months. It's what got me through the interview without any issues. Has anyone else had family give them weird advice that actually worked out?

That uncle gave you solid advice and it's good you listened. What people don't always think about is how paperwork like that can also help if you ever need to apply for a loan or rent an apartment. Landlords and banks want to see a steady work history, and those old pay stubs and letters of employment can be proof if your current job changes suddenly. Also, keeping records of where you lived and who you lived with matters more than most realize. If you ever need to renew your visa or get a green card, they ask for addresses going back years. A simple utility bill or lease agreement in your name can save you a lot of headaches. Just a small thing that makes a big difference down the road.
