Paper resumes finally got me an interview in Vienna

After 4 months of online applications going nowhere, I printed 20 resumes on plain paper and walked into shops and offices around the 7th district. One bakery owner said 'nobody does this anymore, you're hired for a trial shift.' Has anyone else found that old-school methods work better than job portals in a new country?

My mate Karl did the same thing in Berlin and got a job at a bike shop in two days.
