The old market in Aleppo had fresh bread every morning. Now I buy it frozen.

I left Syria in 2015 and ended up in Berlin. For 3 years I couldn't find bread that tasted right. Last month I found a small bakery run by a guy from Damascus. Same smell, same warmth. First bite hit me hard. Has anyone else found a small piece of home in some random place and it just wrecked you for the day?

First bite hit me hard" - man, that line got me. I had a similar moment with olive oil from a little shop in Kreuzberg, turns out the guy imports it straight from his family's grove near Idlib. One taste and I was back in my grandmother's kitchen, couldn't focus on anything else that day.

Right? Same thing happened to me with olives. Found a jar in some random Turkish shop in Neukölln and I stood in the aisle crying over pickled vegetables. Really made me question my life choices.
