Got roasted on a drywall texture job, actually appreciated it

Had a guy on the Alberta Building Envelope forum tell me my knock down texture looked like a pizza crust that fell off a counter. I mean, he was blunt but he was right, so I switched from a 12 inch knife to a hopper gun and practiced on scrap board for about 4 hours. Has anyone else had a brutal comment that ended up improving their finish work in a real way?

Knock down texture is one of those things where everyone's got a different eye for it, so one guy's pizza crust is another guy's perfectly fine wall. 4 hours on scrap board sounds like a lot of time for something that might look identical from three feet away. But hey, if it made you feel better about the work, that's what counts. Just don't let one forum comment turn into a whole new career crisis. Some folks on those building forums just like to hear themselves talk.
