Maybe it's just me but I think premade cabinets are way overrated

I was talking to my buddy Frank last weekend about redoing my kitchen and he kept pushing those pre-assembled RTA cabinets from the big box store. He said it would save me 40 hours of work easy but I did the math and it's like $800 more for basically the same MDF materials. I've been building my own cabinet boxes out of birch plywood for 15 years and I honestly think they hold up way better than anything you'd get pre-made. Frank's a good guy but he's never actually built a set of cabinets himself so his opinion just hit different when I realized he was just repeating what some sales guy told him. Has anyone else tried building their own boxes and found they lasted longer than the premade ones?

Hell yeah, premade stuff is just overpriced particle board junk.

Depends on what you're comparing it to though. Does that include the mid-range stuff from places like IKEA or are we talking about the really cheap flatpack from Walmart?
