That $200 shop vac I bought from Canadian Tire last year finally clogged up on me today
Picked it up on a whim during a boxing day sale thinking it would handle sawdust from my miter saw no problem. It worked fine for about 8 months but now the filter is packed and it barely sucks half as good as my neighbor's old rigid model. Anyone else had luck unclogging these things or should I just bite the bullet and get a different brand?

I read somewhere that those Canadian Tire shop vacs are basically rebranded Chinese units with lower grade foam filters that just get destroyed by fine sawdust. You might be able to unclog it by taking the filter outside and hitting it against a wall or using a stiff brush, but mine never really recovered either. From what I've heard, the Rigid models have those pleated filters that are way easier to clean and they sell a special filter bag that catches the really fine stuff.

Nobody's talking about the water trap issue with foam filters. Fine dust mixes with moisture in the air, clogs the foam solid. Tried running mine in a damp basement once, filter turned into a brick in 10 minutes. Pleated filters shed water way better, don't hold that wet dust the same way.
