Forgot my winter tires in the garage until the first big snow hit

I was on the Henday near the Anthony Henday exit when my car started sliding on black ice. Had to limp it to a Kal Tire on 118 Ave at 30 km/h and they got me in for $150 same-day. Has anyone else been caught off guard by that first freeze here?

Yep, heard a guy say the Henday turns into a skating rink every year.

The shop I used was on 99 Street and they were super chill about it, I actually showed up without an appointment after sliding through an intersection on the Henday and they squeezed me in between other jobs for maybe $130 or something. What saved me was I'd already taken my all-seasons off and just had the winters sitting in my trunk, so they just needed to swap them on and balance them, which is way faster than mounting new tires. I think a lot of people don't realize that if you can get there with your winter tires in the car, the shop can usually get you out way quicker than if you need a whole new set installed. Black ice is no joke though, I was going like 40 on the Henday and my ABS was chattering like crazy just trying to slow down for the exit. Everyone should just throw their winters on in October, seriously, it's not worth gambling with that first freeze.

You really think the Henday needs black ice to be a disaster? I swear that road is cursed by a guy who lost a bet with a snowplow driver. $150 same day is actually decent though, I paid $200 last year at a different shop because I forgot to book ahead and they knew I was desperate. The worst part is how everyone forgets how to drive on the first real snow, like they've never seen winter before. I almost got rear ended three times just trying to merge onto the Whitemud. We all end up looking like idiots sliding around in our sedans while the trucks just laugh at us.
