Just realized my old snow shovel was making winter mornings way harder

I used to just grab the cheapest shovel at Canadian Tire every fall and fight with heavy wet snow all winter. Last January after that big dump that buried Whyte Ave, my back was killing me and I spent almost 40 minutes just clearing my driveway. A buddy loaned me his ergonomic scoop shovel with a curved handle and I finished in 15 minutes. Has anyone else switched shovel types and noticed a huge difference?

My neighbour Vern finally talked me into getting one of those ergonomic snow pushers with the bent handle after I spent a full hour digging out my driveway in that February blizzard. I was stubborn about my old flat shovel because it was what my dad always used, but I had to admit he was right after the first snow with the new one. The curved handle saved my lower back and I cut my shoveling time almost in half. I actually don't dread winter mornings anymore, which I never thought would happen.

Nina_clark you mentioning Vern and his ergonomic shovel reminded me of my Uncle Gord who SWORE by his old wooden handle shovel until he tried my pop's bent handle one. Now he's got three different shovels for different snow types, it's kind of ridiculous. I actually broke my favorite plastic scoop last year on that wet heavy stuff and had to borrow a neighbor's metal grain shovel, which was like using a garden spade on cement. Now I'm paranoid about the weight ratings on shovels and check them at the store like I'm buying a winter coat.
