That 'free estimate' from a roofing company cost me $300

Had a guy from a known Edmonton roofing company come by last spring, said he'd give me a free inspection and quote. He found 'wind damage' on my shingles and said I'd get a full replacement through insurance. Turned out he filed a claim without asking me, insurance denied it, and my premium went up $300 for the year. Anyone else deal with those door-to-door roofers promising insurance payouts?

Read a news article a few months back about roofing companies doing this exact same thing across Alberta. They said some of these guys get a commission for every claim they file whether the homeowner knows about it or not. I mean, it's basically a scam where they use your policy as a lottery ticket for themselves. Sorry you got stuck with the premium hike, that's a rough way to learn that lesson.

Wait @matthewh28, did that article say if there's any way to fight back or report these companies to insurance regulators? Seems like there should be some accountability.
