Choosing between a 1970s bungalow in Bonnie Doon and a new condo downtown...
We had to pick between a fixer upper near the river valley for $450k and a brand new unit with fees. We went with the bungalow, and the first year has been a lot of work but we love the space. Anyone else face a similar old versus new choice here in the city?

I used to think hidden repairs were a deal breaker, but having that yard for our dog totally changed my mind.

How did you budget for the Reno costs? We went with an older house too and the hidden repairs really added up, but having a yard made it worth it for us.

Yeah, the hidden repairs really do add up. We set aside an extra 20% on top of our reno budget just for surprises, and we still ended up using most of it on old plumbing we didn't see coming. Having the yard for my kids to play in is the only thing that kept me sane through all the extra costs.
